Maggie Brown and Kendra Shank Abbey Speak

“Abbey recorded the Freedom Now Suite with Max Roach and my father, Oscar Brown Jr., so I knew of her as a child but our relationship really developed after Abbey saw a performance I did with my father at the Schomberg Center in New York in 1998,” said Chicago born artist, Maggie Brown. “I was both surprised and thrilled when Abbey called me and asked I record “Caged Bird” and “It’s Supposed to Be Love” with her. When she told me we would be doing bird calls in “Caged Bird,” I thought how am I going to do that? Where am I going to get bird call inspiration since I live in Chicago. I thought maybe there are birds in a back alley somewhere,’ chuckled the talented songstress. “But what she did was taught me to listen. Then suddenly I heard bird sounds around me everywhere. She taught me to learn how to let the melodies flow. How to hear the changes in music and learn to recognize those changes in life” said Maggie whose one-woman show “Legacy: Our Wealth of Music” explores the evolution of African American music.”

“Walking into Abbeys apartment was like walking into a shrine for the creative spirit,” claimed jazz singer Kendra Shank whose latest CD is entitled “Mosaic.” “Abbey practiced all the arts. She painted. She composed. She wrote poetry. She sculpted and sewed her own clothes. She even enjoyed arts and crafts. I remember her making a Woolly Mammoth out of a woman's glove. Everywhere you looked in Abbey's apartment there was something creative going on. Astrologically, Abbey was a Leo and she loved lions, even painted some. She often reminded me that an artist's job is to speak their truth. I think she believed that when you are present and walking your path of truth, your life unfolds in magical ways,” said Kendra who paid tribute to Abbey via her CD entitled “A Spirit Free.”

Because Ms. Lincoln was oftentimes strong in her convictions, some people saw Abbey as being bitter and angry. “It annoys me when people label Abbey. Yes, there were times Abbey spoke out in anger against injustices but it was coming from a place of knowing. Abbey believed that at the core of our being as human spirits is love” clarified Shank.
